Germany put on a typically efficient display to put an enthusiastic but ineffective Australian team to the sword. The scoreline of 4-0 didn't flatter the impressive German team as they missed numerous other chances. Australia would point to the harsh dismisal of striker Tim Cahill in the second half but in reality the Aussies were always outclassed by a long way in this match.
Result....Germany 4 Australia 0
In a world cup of shock results, yet another fancied team fell to defeat today with Germany losing 1-0 to Serbia. An uncharacteristic mistake in the German defence allowed the Serbs to take the lead. The Spanish referee might well be joining some of the departing teams on an early plane home after a poor performance which included the very harsh dismissal of Klose for Germany.
Despite this the Germans won a penalty for handball – and typical for their day – had it saved by the Serbian goalkeeper.
The Germans hit the bar and had some reasonable chance but Serbia also went close and with more effort could have put the game beyond doubt with a second goal.
Result....Germany 0 Serbia 1
In an exciting match Australia took the lead following the Ghana goalkeeper being unable to hold onto the ball from a free kick and Holman followed up to score. In the 25th minute the game moved into high drama when Harry Kewell was dismissed for handling the ball on the line. The resulting penalty was put away by Gyan.
Ghana chose to rely on long shots and breakaways in the second half while Australia pushed forward looking for the winning goal. However despite some good chances the game ended in a draw.
Result....Ghana 1 v 1 Australia

Australia put in their best performance of the world cup against a Serbian side who only needed to win to guarantee their place in the next round. The enterprising Australians moved into a two nil lead with goals from Cahill and Holman before Aussie hearts were broken by a consolation from Pantelic in the last few minutes.
The result meant that both teams will not be progressing in the competition.
